Monroe Golf & Country Club is a semi-private, 18-hole golf course located in Monroe, Michigan.
This Donald Ross-designed course first opened for play in 1919.
This course is a true Donald Ross Design, where the greens are quite fast and the rough is long. The fairways are cut short and are not wide, extremely tight with sharp doglegs, and are tree-lined. There is some water that comes into play. The signature holes are #5 and #6. The terrain is semi-rolling and the par 3 greens are well protected, with high mounds.
Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,400 yards. From the forward (ladies) tees, the course measures 5,517 yards and is a par-74. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 565 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 6, a par-3 that plays to 167 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 7, a 409-yard par-4 challenge, and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Monroe Golf Course is # 16, a 176-yard par-3.

I have been looking forward to playing this Donald Ross course that was built in 1919 since I found out it's now Semi-Private, If you call a couple of days ahead, they will work around getting you close to what time you are looking for. The Senior rate of $30 18/cart ($40 normal) is more than fair for the Monday - Thursday tee time on this great course.
The course has a good mix of sand traps by the greens and grassy bunkers along the narrow fairways. The large trees that border most fairways are trimmed up nicely by maintenance or many years of stray balls taking their toll. They have three (3) tee boxes that start at Red 5,515yd / 66.3 / 116, Green 6,055yd / 68.8 / 123, up to Black 6,400yd / 70.5 / 126 on this Par 36/36 tree-lined layout.
The Front 9 layout is mostly a "Straightaway" layout with medium-sized greens that are slightly undulating and not too difficult to read. Sand traps frame every green but 5,7,9,14 with elevation changes that change due to swirling wind around those tees. The #4 Par 5 hole at 541yds Hpc 5 is tree-lined narrow, into the wind to the elevated green. The #6 is a nice downhill, wind at your back 167 yds Par 3 that had me playing 2 clubs less than the yardage. The #9 is a straightaway 565yd Par 5 that has LH/RH water the last 200yds in so threading the needle coming home.
The Back 9 is still fairway wooded but is mostly slight doglegs so hit to the outside corners and you'll have a clear shot to the greens. The #10 is an easy 334yd Par 4 and #11 is a slight dogleg left 480 yds Par 5 so get those early Par's now. The #12 is a 506yd Par 5 playing into the wind, elevated green with a creek crossing 100yds out in from of the green with a front sand trap. The #14 is a sweeping LH 440yd Par 4 that has a tough 180yd tee carry to the corner leaving 200yds to the elevated green. Finishing holes #17/#18 are easy Par 4's at 297/302yds that leave you feeling very good.
I enjoyed playing here on this 103-year-old traditional course that is well kept and still delivers a challenge. Ended up shooting 43/40 w/34putts from the Blacks (3,401/2,999) and look forward to returning soon.
